Led by Senior Emily Frederick, Falcons take 5th Place at Macomb County Meet

Emily Frederick County Meet

“There have been some very good teams in the county,” said Big Reds coach Tony Grice after his team wrapped up its fourth straight championship in Saturday’s Macomb County Swimming and Diving Invitational at L’Anse Creuse North.

“They’ve definitely kept us on our toes, kept us wanting more and making us push ourselves every year to do better. It’s been Eisenhower this year and last year, Dakota the two years before that — awesome teams that gave us a good run. It’s been exciting.”

Chippewa Valley finished with 346 points. Second-place Eisenhower had 310 and L’Anse Creuse took third with 242.  The Lady Falcons came in with a respectable 5th place finish with 7 swimmers qualifying for County Meet (Frederick, Emily Fleming, Maddy Keith, Katie Pugh, Desiree Quinn, Sarika Mahimikar, & Lauren Gallick.)

Chippewa Valley’s Skylar Muzichuk and our very own Emily Frederick both broke Dakota High Marah Pugh’s old county mark by more than a second. Muzichuk was clocked in 57.95 and Frederick’s second-place time was 58.46.

“I didn’t know I was on a record pace — but it felt pretty fast,” Muzichuk said. “I saw Emily on that one, that’s for sure. It was my best time — by a lot.”

Frederick’s winning time in the 500 was 5:14.85, more than an eight-second gap over second place.

“I just wanted to keep up a good pace,” she said. ‘You don’t want to die I give a lot of credit to the girls I swim with every day. We push each other. Not just on the high school team but I swim club the year round and those guys are always there to push me.”

She wouldn’t have minded getting pushed a little more Saturday.

“It’s a lot harder to swim by yourself,” she said. “When you don’t have somebody to push you, it’s all you. It’s all mental.”

Frederick could even keep a smile after losing by an eyelash in the 100 fly.  “Skyler is really good. She deserved it,” said the Falcons senior.

Emily Frederick and Emily Fleming earned three wins and a second-place finish each, leading the Falcons to a 108-77 win over the host Titans. The only other Falcon swimmer posting a win in an individual event was sophomore Megan Watford, who won the 100 freestyle (58.20.) “The girls swam very well, especially coming off a very hard practice (on Monday),” Smith said. “For them to turn around and come back for a dual meet against Stevenson, I was really proud of them.”

Their efforts were supported by 3 divers (Mary Kate Gatto, Danae Orsini, & Rosa Leopardi) and the effort & enthusiasm of the rest of Lady Falcon team.

The Falcons have youth on their side with only five seniors – Fleming, Frederick, Maddy Keith, Caitlin Pugh and Rebecca Smith – on the team. Smith said all five of his seniors bring plenty of experience to the team and are leaders to the younger swimmers.

“This group of seniors we have on this team have been swimming for four years,” Smith said. “They’ve been doing a great job, but have a lot of work to do. We’re nowhere near where we’re capable of being, but time will tell as the season goes on.”

The win improved Ford’s record to 1-2 overall, 1-0 league.
